This part of the documenation assumes you know LaTeX and you have followed the guided tour. If do not know LaTeX and you are interested in it you may wish to visit its official documentation pages.
As you may have concluded after reading the guided tour, one of the decisions when developing the translator was that the input text may have LaTeX denotations (although not all of them) without imposing it to be a complete LaTeX document. This together with the need for rules that ensure that the generated Braille is acceptable made it impossible to translate correctly every LaTeX document.
The following facts should be considered:
- there may be ambiguities: the same symbol may have different meanings in different contexts and may have different Braille representations for these meanings. Due to the scarce resources of this project, implementing an analysis of the meaning of the text to solve ambiguities was not possible. The alternative was to fix the meaning of some characters and accept commands not defined in LaTeX, or only defined in some LaTeX extensions, that allow the user to clearly indicate what is intended
- the Braille notation is limited: for instance, out of mathematical expressions there are only two text styles, normal or emphasised. Moreover, many of the LaTeX denotations in mathematical mode cannot be represented in Braille; examples are the calligraphic style or the large majority of the AMS symbols
- making a distinction between expressions and non-mathematical text is essential: in order to avoid wrong translations. The option taken was to consider as an expression only what appears in any of the LaTeX mathematical mode environments that the translator recognises and the boxes in them are constrained to only have letters.
With the aim of reducing the amount of work in revising existing LaTeX documents (or generated by a program) for submission to the translator, it ignores a set of LaTeX commands and environments that are not useful for the translation, e.g., spacing commands.
